Theta Chi Appeal Update

The Student Life Committee (SLC) held an appeal hearing on Thursday, May 25, 2023, regarding the outcome of the Formal Resolution process in which the Gamma Omicron chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity was found responsible for violations of the Student Code of Conduct and was suspended for four years. 

As background, the SLC hears appeals based on the grounds of (1) Sufficiency of the evidence to support the decision; (2) The appropriateness of the sanction; (3) Germane new evidence; (4) Procedural error significantly affecting the outcome. The Appeal proceeding is not designed to repeat the original case adjudication but instead to address the organization’s appeal based on one or a combination of these four areas.

Based on the information presented during the appeal, the SLC determined the findings of responsibility will remain in place and modified the outcomes to support the return of the chapter without the requirements of recolonization or reapplication through the Office of Student Engagement’s Fraternity and Sorority Life expansion process. The SLC eliminated the on-campus housing occupancy requirements so students may remain in their selected room/suite/apartment. 

The SLC believes the modifications to the outcomes continue to underscore Wake Forest University’s expectations regarding the fraternity and sorority community’s obligation to diligently reduce harmful behaviors while accounting for Gamma Omicron’s organizational responsibility as opposed to the individual members of the organization. Each member of Gamma Omicron has received an updated notice detailing organizational outcomes. At this point, Wake Forest University’s decision regarding Gamma Omicron is final.
