Update on Theta Chi
Based on a series of Code of Conduct violations, Wake Forest University has collaborated with Theta Chi Fraternity International Headquarters and has suspended the charter of the Gamma Omicron chapter for a period of four years. The fraternity must demonstrate a continuous period of four years of non-operation to be eligible to request a return to Wake Forest University. The chapter may be eligible to apply for recognition again within the University’s fraternity and sorority community in August 2027.
This decision was made following a Code of Conduct formal resolution meeting on Friday, April 21, 2023. The University’s decision cited the chapter’s failure to follow the terms of a one-year organizational probation, which Theta Chi had been placed on earlier in the spring semester. As part of this probation, the chapter chose to accept responsibility for violating the Code of Conduct after admitting responsibility for an incident of physical hazing and a subsequent violation related to high-risk alcohol consumption.
The Theta Chi National Headquarters has issued a suspension of Gamma Omicron pending investigation. Theta Chi Headquarters has conducted meetings with the chapter’s Alumni Probation Committee and conducted a Membership Review with individual members of the chapter. The national organization may institute its own conduct sanctions at a future date to be determined.
Theta Chi new members who have not been initiated by the chapter are able to join other fraternities as soon as the fall semester. Staff in the Office of Student Engagement are available to connect with members of the organization with support resources on campus.
The seriousness of the formal resolution underscores Wake Forest University’s support of a fraternity and sorority community that stewards an undergraduate experience where students matter and belong. The efforts put into assisting chapters in fostering this experience are of the highest priority, as is the expectation that organizations diligently reduce harmful behaviors.
